The Huia feather is a revered taonga, treasured possession for Māori which symbolizes mana or prestige including leadership status.

The Huia became extinct in the early 20th century due to British and European extraordinary fashion pursuit for their ātaahua / beautiful feathers resulting in total decimation.

The feathers were often stored in cocoon shaped carved boxes known as wakahuia.

 

The tīeke is a glossy, black, medium -sized bird with a distinctive copper “saddle” on it’s back. According to Māori tradition, the saddle marking on the tīeke was caused by the demi-god, Māui. Made thirsty by the heat of the sun, Māui asked the tīeke to fetch him some water but the bird ignored him. This irritated Māui and he seize the bird with his hot hands, singeing the feathers on its back.

The Kārearea falcon is New Zeeland’s only falcon. It is estimated that there is between 5,000 and 8,000 which makes this spectacular hunter in the sky rarer than all species of Kiwi.  

 

The single cream gold colour pallet reflects the young Kārearea fledgling feathers found on their chest.

Kao / No, these are made from black bicycle inner tube. Therefore, to whakamana, give prestige to the Huia feather style created, predominately black with white tip tail.

The Pukeko is probably one of the most recognised native birds in New Zealand with its distinctive deep blue violet colourings and a habit of feeding on the ground near wetlands.

How do I care for my earrings?
Minimise the effects of the rubber fading, breakage and peeling of hand painted areas.
Store somewhere safe which allows earrings to hang freely away from direct sunlight
Remove before entering water
Remove when active
Remove when sleeping
